There are many behaviors that are dangerous if engaged in while driving. One of the most dangerous things to do while driving is to drive under the influence. Driving under the influence increases the risk of being involved in an accident. Motor vehicle accidents can have serious consequences, including property damage, injuries, and even fatalities. Because of the risks associated with being involved in a car accident, it is important that drivers always practice safe driving. Recently, a report came out indicating that convictions for driving under the influence, as well as related offenses, have gone down in Wisconsin.
According to the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau, the number of yearly convictions for operating while under the influence fell by almost 18,000 between 2004 and 2018. Further, fatal accidents in which alcohol was a factor have also declined during the past 12 years according to the report. Driving under the influence is a problem statewide, but the highest per capita instances of it occur in the northern and central parts of Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Legislature enacted some policy changes regarding operating while under the influence during the time period, which may have contributed to a decline in the offenses. However, the report states that there is not a single predominant cause for the reduction in operating while under the influence offenses and operating while under the influence related accidents.
Operating while under the influence is very dangerous. Alcohol can slow reaction time, reduce coordination, reduce concentration, decrease vision, and inhibit judgment. All of these factors can contribute to the risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident. Because of the dangers associated with drinking and driving, it should always be avoided. We can all help to keep the roadways safer by never getting behind the wheel after we have been drinking.
