It has been said that there are two seasons in Wisconsin: winter and construction. With the summer right around the corner, there will be more construction work on the roadways. Because of the safety risks for both drivers and construction workers, it is important that drivers practice safe driving while in work zones. The following are some tips to help stay safe in construction zones:

• Stay alert and minimize distractions. Your full attention should be on the roadway. Eliminate distractions such as using a phone or eating while driving.
• Pay attention to the road. Oftentimes, work zones will have additional signs and it is important that you are reading them and paying attention to your surroundings.
• Do not tailgate. High speeds mean that it takes a longer time to stop. Increase your following distance so that you will have plenty of time to stop if needed.
• Obey the posted speed limit. It is imperative that you drive the posted speed limit or at a speed safe for road conditions.
• Expect the unexpected. Construction can lead to delays and additional obstacles in the roadway. Plan ahead before leaving and ensure you leave extra time to get to your destination.
