Memorial Day Weekend Traffic

May 25 , 2018 | Safe Driving

Many people see Memorial Day Weekend as the beginning of summer. Many Americans travel to celebrate this holiday weekend. Because of the high volumes of traffic during, those who are planning to travel should be prepared for delays on the roadways. With the roadways being filled with heavy traffic, it is especially important to use safe driving practices to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.

According to AAA, almost 42 million Americans are anticipated to travel for Memorial Day weekend. This is a five percent increase from the amount of travelers and the most anticipated travelers in more than a decade.  Of the holiday weekend travelers, the vast majority of them will be traveling to their destination in an automobile. AAA anticipates that 36.6 million of the almost 42 million anticipated travelers will be going to their destination via automobile.

AAA predicts that the worst time for drivers to hit the roadways will be on Thursday, May 24th and Friday, May 25th in the late afternoon because the work commuters will  be mixing with the holiday travelers. AAA says that the travel time in metropolitan areas could double in length when compared to a regular trip because of the high volumes of traffic. Even though gas prices are highest they have been on Memorial Day Weekend since 2014, this does not seem to be deterring travelers.

Because of the heavy traffic anticipated this weekend, safe driving practices are especially important to help keep those on the roadways safe. Drivers should anticipate delays and leave extra time to make their trip so they do not rush. Drivers should also make sure that they are not engaging in distracted driving activities such as using their cellphone while driving or eating while driving. These activities take the driver’s attention away from the roadway, thus increasing the likelihood of an accident. By making sure that we practice safe driving, we can make the roadways safer for everyone.
