Driving can be a dangerous activity. It becomes even more dangerous when the parts of the car do not function as expected. Recently, Ford has issued a recall because of an issue with the steering wheel in some of their vehicles. The steering wheel is very important to maintaining control of the vehicle. Because of the importance of the steering wheel, it is imperative that owners of the recalled vehicles get the steering wheel fixed.

The Ford recall affects almost 1.4 million vehicles in North America, with 1.3 million of those vehicles being in the United States. The cars that are affected by the recall are the Ford Fusion and the Lincoln MKZ cars, which have the model years of 2014 through 2018. These are both rather popular midsize vehicles.

The recall comes after reports of the steering wheel in these vehicles detaching from the steering column. If the steering wheel detaches from the steering column, drivers can lose the ability to steer their vehicle, therefore losing control of their vehicle. The company has received reports of two crashes caused by this problem and also a report of an injury from this problem. The company has stated that the loosening of the steering wheel is caused by the steering wheel bolts loosening over time.  The loosening of the bolts can lead to the steering wheel becoming loose or even coming off the steering column completely.

To correct this problem, Ford dealers will replace the bolts in the steering wheels with longer bolts that have more aggressive threads as well as a nylon patch to help prevent them from becoming loose. If you own one of the cars affected by the recall, it is very important that you bring your car to a dealership to have the steering wheel repaired.
