There are many hazardous behaviors that people engage in when they are behind the wheel. These behaviors range from not driving the speed limit or at a speed not safe for weather conditions or using a cell phone while driving. Unfortunately, distracted driving behaviors, such as texting while driving, have become so prevalent that April has been declared National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
The goal of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month is to raise awareness about the dangers of engaging is distracted driving activities. During the month, law enforcement officials across the country are mobilizing to look out for drivers who are using their cell phone behind the wheel. Using a cell phone while driving is very dangerous because it takes your attention away from the roadway. When your attention is off the roadway, it increases your chances of being involved in an accident as it reduces the time you have to react.
Distracted driving greatly contributes to accidents all across the country. According to the National Safety Council, every day in the United States at least nine people are killed in accidents where distracted driving was a factor. Additionally, another 100 people are injured every day in accidents where distracted driving was a factor.
While technology is often convenient and helpful, it can also pose serious risks to safety when used at inappropriate times. One of those times where it is inappropriate to use technology is when you are behind the wheel. When driving, you should put away your electronics and focus on the roadway. By putting all of your attention on the roadway, you can help to keep the roadways safer for everyone.
